Djembes Drumming workshop to be held

The New River Community and Technical College Office of Workforce Education is sponsoring a Djembes Drumming workshop on Tuesdays for six weeks beginning April 29.

The workshop will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the New River Community and Technical College Beckley Campus located at 167 Dye Drive in the Harper Industrial Park.

Instructor Kasey Jones will teach the traditional rhythms of West Africa that have been passed down through the Mandingue people for centuries in a fun-filled, learning environment for all ages and levels of experience.

Jones is the founder and musical director of HoloRhythm Community Drum School. He has been a student of the Djembe for more than eight years, recently becoming a certified associate instructor with Bill Scheidt of Tam Tam Mandingue Winston-Salem, a branch of an international school founded by world-renowned master drummer Mamady-Keita.

The same workshop will be offered at the Workforce West Virginia Building in Summersville from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays from April 30 through June 4.

Tuition is $60. There is also a rental fee for the drums of $30. Please call the New River CTC Office of Workforce Education in Summersville at 304-883-2446 for more information and to register for the class. Class size is limited and preregistration is required.
