The popular Beginner Cake Decorating class returns to New River Community and Technical College this fall. Jeannie Neff, owner and operator of The Cake Box, will again teach the class, which has been expanded from four to six weeks to allow greater training and more detailed instruction in various areas.
The class will be in Summersville beginning Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. The class concludes Tuesday, Nov. 13.
Students will learn how to prepare and bake a cake properly, including how to “spice up” a box mix to make it taste like a gourmet cake. Instruction will also focus on using various types of icing, different icing techniques, how to create desired colors, piping, handwriting and lettering and the use of fondant and other decorative items.
A student from an earlier class remarked, “Jeannie is an excellent teacher. She was so kind and patient as she taught us. I learned so much; it gave me the confidence to make a multi-tier cake for a family function that turned out great.”
The tuition is $90, and students will be given a supply list of materials that are needed prior to class beginning.
New River also is offering a class designed to add a little spook to your fall treats. Sarah Palfrey will bring her unique and fun creativity to the one-session Creepy Cupcakes Decorating Class from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, Oct. 6, at Summersville Public Library. Tuition is $25, and a $5 supply fee is payable to the instructor. Students will learn how to make three different creepy cupcakes, making two of each type for a total of six cupcakes. This class is open to participants of all ages; however, children under age 12 must have an adult remain with them the entire class.
