Beckley Area Foundation fills board of directors seats

FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMUNITY

The Beckley Area Foundation is governed by a 15-member board of directors. Each member can serve a maximum of two consecutive three-year terms before rotating off the board. Forest H. Lynch and Donald F. Mock III recently filled the places vacated by Susan Pietrantozzi and Dawn Dayton. Hazel Burroughs, Jon Calfee and Bill O’Brien were each re-elected to a second term.

Pietrantozzi and Dayton were presented gifts in recognition of their six years of service at the BAF Annual Dinner in July. Pietrantozzi served on the Audit, Investment, “Everyone Can Be a Philanthropist,” and Advisory Committees. She chaired the Students First Grant Committee. Dayton served as secretary of the board, Executive Committee Member, Publications Committee Chair and Co-Chair of the Scholarship Committee for several years.

Mike Cavendish, president of the BAF Board of Directors, commented at the Annual Dinner, “We never really let our board members go. Former, as well as current board members, help with special projects, scholarship award presentations, committee service and planning efforts. Our community foundation has grown and prospered due in no small part to the on-going support of past board members.”

New board member Forest Lynch is a life-long resident of Raleigh County. He has a BSBA degree from West Virginia University and is an accountant. He served on the BAF Audit Committee, Investment Committee and Distributions Committee prior to being elected to serve on the board.

D.F. Mock is the Market President of the South Market of United Bank Inc. A native West Virginian, he has lived in Raleigh County for five years. He holds a BSBA degree from West Virginia University with a double major in finance and business administration. He also earned an MBA degree from WVU. His wife is Julie Ann Hatcher Mock.

He serves on the Board of Directors of both the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce and United Way of Southern West Virginia. Mock is also a member of the Beckley Rotary Club, the Loan Committee of the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority, Beckley Masonic Lodge #95, Generation Beckley, and the Hinton Elks Lodge #821. He served on the BAF Distributions Committee for the past two years.

“The Beckley Area Foundation has always enjoyed the support of a strong, dedicated, hardworking board of directors,” noted Susan Landis, executive director. “They believe in the simple concept that people can join together to create an institution that will make a real difference in their community today and tomorrow.”

BAF manages permanent endowments that have been created by the community, for the community. These endowed funds are composed of contributions both large and small, pooled together and carefully invested to grow and produce income. The earnings are used to help nonprofit charitable organizations enrich the lives of southern West Virginians. With only the income being distributed, donations continue to “grow and give” indefinitely for the good of the community.
