WVSOM to host presentations for HIV/AIDS awareness day

 

The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine is taking action against HIV/AIDS.

The institution, along with the support of the Office of Women’s Health, within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will host a lecture and film screening in honor of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2013 at 5 p.m. Thursday in the main building Year 2 classroom on the WVSOM campus in Lewisburg.

Community members are invited to learn more about the impact of HIV/ AIDS with issues relevant to awareness, statutes and treatments. The event is free, and refreshments will be served.

The event will feature a lecture by Dr. William Short, M.D., MPH, assistant professor of medicine at Jefferson Medical College and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, who has broad experience in caring for women with HIV. A screening of the PBS “Frontline” documentary “The Age of AIDS” will follow the lecture.

The event is funded in part by the Office of Women’s Health. The WVSOM Student Osteopathic Internal Medicine Association and Student Affairs office will host the event.

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a nationwide observance that takes place every March and is designed to raise awareness of the increasing impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls. Women of all ages can get HIV/AIDS, and they account for 24 percent of all HIV diagnoses.
