Although the next few months will be filled with holiday celebrations and tons of food, the YMCA is encouraging families to stay active during the fall and winter seasons.
Registration for the 2013-2014 YMCA Youth Basketball Program is now under way at the Y, and Sports and Recreation Director Daniel Vass said it’s a great way for kids to stay active.
The Youth Basketball Program is one of the most popular, volunteer-driven programs at the Y. The program emphasizes equal participation, sportsmanship and skills of the game.
“It’s a great way for kids to come out, learn the game and have fun,” Vass said.
The program has four age divisions for boys and girls from Pre-K to sixth grade.
The cost is $30 for Y members and $80 for nonmembers. Registration deadline is Nov. 27.
Another upcoming event at the Y is the 37th annual Thanksgiving Day 5-Mile Run and Walk and the 1-mile Family Fun Run, which will be held Nov. 28, Thanksgiving Day morning, at the Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex.
Entry fees are $15 in advance or $20 the day of the race for the 5-mile run and walk, and $10 for the Family Fun Run. The deadline to pre-register is Tuesday, Nov. 26.
“This is a great event for families. We have a lot of families who make it a tradition to participate in the event together,” Vass said.
“It’s a healthy option, rather than sitting around eating turkey all day. Come out and be healthy that morning.”
Day of race registration will be held from 7 to 8 a.m. at the Holcomb Building between the two stadium fields at the complex.
Awards will be given to the top three overall men and women runners, top three men and women age division runners and top five men and women walkers.
All pre-registered participants will receive the official, commemorative race T-shirt. Participants who register the day of the race will receive a shirt while supplies last.
“In West Virginia, we’re one of the most obese states around,” Vass said. “You can never be too conscious about your health and especially your children’s health.”
