Free diabetes classes offered to those with Medicare

The Everyone with Diabetes Counts (EDC) program is providing several opportunities around the state for people with Medicare to participate in free diabetes education classes.

The free classes, part of a program led by the West Virginia Medical Institute (WVMI), are open to people with Medicare who have diabetes, their families and caregivers.  Nurses, community health workers and volunteers trained by WVMI will cover topics that include managing every aspect of diabetes, from nutrition to exercise to important tests and exams.

Classes include interactive demonstrations such as a “build your plate” visualization of fat, sugar and salt content for a meal; props to demonstrate healthy versus diseased kidney filtration; games and storytelling. For a fun and engaging learning experience,  join a class listed below.

Upcoming classes include:

- Greenbrier County - White Sulphur Springs Public Library, 203 West Main St., Oct. 8, 15 and 22 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

- Nicholas County - Summersville Regional Medical Center, Outpatient Clinic behind Hospital, 4th Floor Conference Room, 400 Fairview Heights Road, every Friday from 10 a.m. to noon

- Raleigh County - Memorial Baptist Church, South Kanawha St., Beckley, Oct. 8 and 14 from 5to 6:30 p.m.

- Raleigh County - Greystone Villages, Senior Living Community, 200 Greystone Drive, Beaver,, Oct. 11, 25 and Nov. 1 at 1 p.m.

n Summers County - Hinton House Apartments, 495 Stokes Drive, Hinton, Oct. 23 and 30 at 11 a.m.

- Summers County Rural Health Clinic, 1500 Terrace St. - Second Floor, Hinton, Oct. 8, 13 and 22 at 10 a.m.
