New River offering new pottery, stepping stones art classes

SUMMERSVILLE — The New River Community and Technical College Office of Workforce Education in Summersville is offering two new, unique and fun art classes this spring: Make Your Own Pottery and Mosaic Stepping Stones.

Mona Goodall is the instructor for both classes. A retired art teacher from Fayette County, Goodall has 31 years of teaching experience, primarily at Oak Hill High School.

She has taught pottery classes as well as other art classes for many years.

It is her love of pottery and gardening that led her to open her own shop, Pear Tree Arts & Garden, at Dove’s Outlet Village.

The Make Your Pottery Class will allow participants to create a piece of hand-built pottery from either the pinch or coil technique.

This class is ideal for beginners who would like to learn more about pottery techniques and design.

This class will be held April 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., April 11, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.,  April 16, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and April 25, 5 to 6 p.m. Tuition is $50 with a $15 supply fee.

Students in the mosaic stepping stones class will create custom stepping stones from glass mosaic imbedded in concrete. The stones are sealed for display outdoors.

Goodall has created stepping stones that have incorporated sports teams, family names, West Virginia coal, the New River New Gorge Bridge and flowers to adorn home gardens.

Participants will develop their own design from which they will create the stone suitable for outside display.

The class will meet April 8, 11, 15, 18, 22, and 25 from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuition is $50, plus a $15 supply fee. Both classes will be offered in the 4-H Building at the Nicholas County Veteran’s Park in Summersville. For more information or to register, call 304-883-2446.
