New River Community and Technical College will host the second annual Cast Iron Cook-Off from 2 to 5 p.m. May 5 at Veteran’s Memorial Park, Summersville.
This event started last spring as a competition among participants in New River’s cooking classes. In its second year, the cook-off promises to be even bigger and better, organizers said.
The main event will be a cooking competition between teams of students from recent New River Community Education cooking classes. Sponsored by Wendlings Food Service, Jackson’s Meat and Produce and West Virginia Homegrown Gardens, this Top Chef-meets-Chopped style cook-off will feature teams vying to create the best appetizer, entrées and dessert using required ingredients as well as other ingredients that will be made available.
Celebrity judges will score each dish based upon presentation, taste and use of ingredients.
This event will be open to the public, and Summersville TV will broadcast the cooking from both kitchens so spectators can cheer on their favorite team. Spectators are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Summers-ville Food Pantry.
Those who come to watch the event can get in on the competition as well in the Potluck People’s Choice Competition. Participants can bring their best prepared appetizer, entrée or dessert for sampling. Every spectator will get one vote. A winner will be chosen as the People’s Choice Winner in each category for taste as well as best presentation. The winner of each category will receive a gift as well as hold bragging rights for having the best potluck dish in Nicholas County.
