Zingers put a lot of life into tiny capsule

Editor’s note: This column by the late Bev Davis originally was published Aug. 2, 2000. Davis passed away Aug. 1, 2010, of a sudden illness.

I love one-liners, those little zingers that put a whole lot of life into a small capsule. Below are a few I’ve collected over the years. The first 19 came from an e-mail citing the source as the Dalai Lama’s advice for the new millennium. The rest are thoughts I’ve kept in a spiritual journal over the years.

- Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

- When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.

- Follow the three R’s, respect for yourself, respect for others and responsibility for all your actions.

- Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

- Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

- Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

- When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

- Spend some time alone every day.

- Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.

- Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

- Live an honorable life. Then, when you get older and think back, you will be able to enjoy it a second time.

- A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.

- Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

- In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.

- Share your knowledge. It’s a way to achieve immortality.

- Be gentle with the earth.

- Once a year, go some place you’ve never been before.

- Judge your success by what you have to give up in order to get it.

- Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.

- Remember that when we are facing the sun, the shadows fall behind us.

- Remind yourself once a day it’s good to be alive.

- Remember you have the right to be happy.

- Reach out to heal someone else’s wound and rejoice at the immediate healing within yourself.

- When you see faults in others, realize the person is a mirror showing you your own character flaws.

- Know that it’s better to be right with somebody than to just be right.

- Don’t seek for more power. Pray for the ability to use the power you have wisely.

- FEAR is an acronym for False Evidence Appearing Real. FAITH is an acronym for Fear Abandoned Is Total Happiness.
