Hutchinson scholarship fund now managed by BAF

— Julia Long has established the Paul and Ruth Hutchinson Memorial Scholarship Fund honoring her parents.

The permanent endowment, now managed by the Beckley Area Foundation, will generate income to be awarded to college-qualified graduates of Woodrow Wilson High School. The recipient must be pursuing a college degree at the University of Charleston - Beckley.

The scholarship may be renewed for three additional years if the recipient maintains a B (3.0) or better average and carries a full academic load.

Ruth O’Dell Hutchinson and Paul Hutchinson Sr. were both born in Beckley. He started Colony Drug Inc. in 1950 and sold the business when he retired in 1975.

They raised three children. Paul R. Hutchinson Jr. is a lawyer and active civic leader in Raleigh County. Paul went to Furman University and law school at West Virginia University. Mary Hutchinson Stover resides in Shady Spring; she went to Morris Harvey, now the University of Charleston. Julia Hutchinson Long lives at Flat Top Lake; she graduated from West Virginia University and came back to Raleigh County to teach at Shady Spring High School.

The family has many ties to Beckley College and its successors. Each of the three Hutchinson siblings attended Beckley College at some point, and both Paul and Mary taught at The College of West Virginia. Six of the Hutchinsons’ grandchildren attended or were graduated from The College of West Virginia.

Julia’s husband Joe played for the Blue Hawks basketball team and graduated from Beckley College in 1957 before going on to school in New Mexico. His mother, as well as an aunt and an uncle, also attended Beckley College.

After retirement, Joe and Julia Long moved back to Beckley and became active at Mountain State University. Recognizing all of their personal connections to the school, and wishing to honor Ruth and Paul Hutchinson, they started a scholarship in memory of her parents through the MSU Foundation.

As the status of the university changed, they wanted the scholarship to continue to benefit a graduate of their alma mater, Woodrow Wilson High School, and to support the higher-education institution on South Kanawha Street as it continues to evolve.

The Paul and Ruth Hutchinson Scholarship Fund is one of several permanent endowments that are being moved from the MSU Foundation to the Beckley Area Foundation. Applicants interested in this scholarship should contact the UC - Beckley Admissions Office.

As in the case of all funds managed by the Beckley Area Foundation, anyone may make additional contributions in any amount to the Paul and Ruth Hutchinson Scholarship Fund. All donations are invested and the income is distributed annually; this ensures that scholarship awards honoring the Hutchinsons will be made for generations to come.
