LEWISBURG — A special Women’s History Month convocation will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. on , March 11, on the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College with the theme of “Wild Wonderful Women of WV.”
Adrienne Biesemeyer of Alderson, a well-known local speaker and counselor, will be featuring 11 women in West Virginia history in her presentation in Room 207 on the second floor of Greenbrier Hall, 101 Church St., Lewisburg.
Among the 11 women will be two of local interest. Biesemeyer will discuss the life and times of Nancy Hart, a Nicholas County resident during the Civil War who was a Confederate spy and “very successful one at that.” Hart is buried in a family cemetery on Cold Knob in Greenbrier County.
Also highlighted will be Pearl Sydenstricker Buck, the famous author who was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Buck was born in her grandmother’s house in Hillsboro.
Other women being featured by Biesemeyer include Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis, Elizabeth Betty Zane, Fanny Cobb Carter, Harriet B. Jones, Kathy Mattea, Mad Ann Bailey, Mary Lou Retton, Mildred Mitchell-Bateman and Mother Jones.
Biesemeyer recently joined the staff of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine after 25 years in a private counseling practice which focused on children and their families.
The public is invited to the convocation. Greenbrier Hall is handicapped accessible through the ground floor entrance near the Greenbrier Historical Society’s North House Museum. There is no charge.
In addition, New River GVC has a National Women’s History Month photo and memorabilia display honoring the former Greenbrier College for Women which occupied the current Greenbrier Hall and Academy Park until the early 1970s. The display is located between the Student Activities Center and the New River CTC Library on the first floor of Greenbrier Hall. It is open to the public for viewing 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday during National Women’s History Month.
The New River GVC observance of Women’s History Month is under the leadership of Wanda Johnson, program coordinator with the office of Student Services.
