BAF Campaign for the 21st Century under way

The Beckley Area Foundation first initiated the Campaign for the 21st Century 21 years ago. This annual appeal puts the most basic premise of a community foundation into practice. Anyone can be a philanthropist. By pooling resources, citizens can make a lasting difference in their community.

The BAF Campaign for the 21st Century reinforces the fact that contributions of any size can be added to an investment pool and generate income that will benefit this and future generations.

“We are offering everyone an opportunity to be a partner in growing a source of discretionary funds that can be used to answer the requests submitted by area public charities in the BAF community grant program,” explained DF Mock, chair of the 2014 Campaign.

“Last year BAF distributed $196,825 from its unrestricted funds. These awards addressed Raleigh county programs in the areas of education, the arts, public recreation, civic beautification, economic development, health and human services. An additional $257,391 was distributed from donor designated funds,“ noted Mock.

“Donations to the Campaign for the 21st Century will increase the asset base of our unrestricted funds so even more worthwhile grants can be awarded in the future.”

This is the only direct appeal made by the Foundation. Individual donations have ranged from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars.

All contributors will be recognized in the 2014-2015 BAF Annual Report. The categories of giving include “Friends” who donate up to $125; “Donors” who give $126 to $250; “Patrons” who give $251 to $500; and Benefactors who contribute $501 and more.

“We frequently use the catch-phrase that working together, we can make this a better place to live, go to school, work, play and retire,” commented Hazel Burroughs, president of the BAF Board. “This is an opportunity for each of us to make a lasting difference.”
