Endowment still helping students attend college

The “Beckley College, College of West Virginia, Mountain State University and University of Charleston-Beckley Alumni Association Fund” has the distinction of having the longest name of any of the 400 permanent endowments managed by the Beckley Area Foundation.

In view of its long history, the length of its name is appropriate.

This endowment was established with funds transferred from the Mountain State University Foundation. The assets were built with donations from individuals who were associated with this evolving educational institution located in Beckley.

“While the name and the administration has changed over time,” noted Susan Landis, executive director of the Beckley Area Foundation, “the importance of the school to its students and to our community has always been significant.”

Mary Jane Riner is the current president of the Alumni Council. Other members include Joe Long, Julia Hutchinson Long, Stan Norman, Beth Perry, Tom Riner and Linda Sumner.

The annual income from the fund shall be used to benefit students attending the University of Charleston-Beckley. The UC-Beckley administration may determine the greatest need including, but not limited to, students’ scholarship needs.

The donors have ensured that the income from this fund shall forever support access to post-high school education for Raleigh County students.

“We are pleased that the Beckley College-MSU alumni association is now working closely with the University of Charles-ton alumni group. The annual financial support from the Alumni Association Fund will be very helpful to deserving UC Beckley students for years to come,” commented Jerry Forster, University of Charleston regional president.

In October 2013, the Beckley Area Alumni Association and the University of Charleston-Beckley continued the practice of honoring Alumni Hall of Fame recipients. Frank Wood received the Career Achievement Award, Sherrie Hunter received the Community Service Award, Dan Bickey received the Distinguished Service Award, Linda Sumner received the Amanda Marcella Adkins Spirit Award and Mona Wiseman received the Distinguished Friend Award.

As in the case of all endowments managed by BAF, anyone may make additional gifts in any amount to this fund. Donations in memory or in honor of someone are welcome. The honoree or the family of the person memorialized will be notified of the gift without reference to the amount.
