Carnegie spring signups beginning

Registration for Carnegie Hall’s Spring Class & Workshop series is now open. Offering drawing, painting, dance, weaving, pottery and more,

Carnegie Hall has a unique learning experience available for those exploring artistic interests at various skill levels, including beginners.

Class sizes are limited to maximize learning, so please register early.

Coming Jan. 25 to conduct a songwriting workshop is singer-songwriter Judith Avers. Avers is a nationally known singer-songwriter based out of Pittsburgh. A former West Virginia resident, she sings and plays guitar in an old-time-inspired female trio band, The Early Mays. She also writes custom songs for people in 60 minutes.

Focusing on inspired songwriting, Avers will guide you through basic songwriting techniques so that you can write your own song.

In addition to learning about the structure of a song, lyrics, melodies, and bridges, she will provide tools to help you get past writer’s block. Avers will help you channel your inspiration and bring all the elements together for you to leave class with a rough draft of your song.

The class will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Beginners are welcome. No experience is necessary. You must be 15 or older to register. Cost is $40 for members, $50 for nonmembers. Bring an instrument if you would like. For the break, bring a sack lunch or stroll downtown and enjoy one of the nearby restaurants.

For a full listing of all classes and workshops, visit the Education page on the Carnegie Hall website at www.carnegiehall wv.org. To register for classes, stop by or call 304-645-7917.

Carnegie Hall’s 2013-14 arts programming is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.

How is it possible that as your nest gets emptier, your garage gets fuller? Living off the grid sounds tantalizing — the extreme version of paring down. But are you ready for solar panels and growing your own groceries or would a smaller home do the trick?
