Dr. Owen Meadows died May 29, 2012. One of the original members of Associates in OB-GYN with Dr. Charles Merritt, Dr. Warren Eliot and Dr. Robert Pulliam, he joined the practice in 1964. He retired in 2000 due to ill health. He had delivered over 8,000 babies and was devoted to his patients and the practice of medicine.
His wife, Brenda, has established a permanent endowment at the Beckley Area Foundation to honor his memory in a meaningful, lasting way. The Owen C. Meadows Jr., M.D., and Brenda J. Meadows Scholarship Fund will generate income to assist individuals from Raleigh County who wish to pursue nursing education in an accredited program.
Owen was born in Hinton, the son of the late Owen C. and Hattie Goff Meadows. He graduated from Hinton High School where his love of football began. After a year at Woodberry Forest, he went to the University of Virginia for his undergraduate degree, medical school and a residency in OB-GYN.
He played linebacker for four years at UVa and served in the Air Force before returning to Charlottesville for medical school. Always a supporter of our military, he worked at the Beckley Military Processing Station, helping with physical examinations until a few weeks before his death.
An energetic man who hated idleness, Meadows once confessed, “I guess I still have that linebacker's mentality. If it moves, hit it!” He managed the long hours, night calls and tedious surgery with relative ease, but did not adapt well to his first attempt at retirement. A few months in Florida proved to be very boring for this physician who loved his career and found fishing, golf, and sunny beaches a weak substitute.
He returned Beckley to work full time but limiting his practice to gynecology and surgery. Owen and his wife built a new home with lots of grass to mow, a shop where he could refinish antique furniture and plenty of room for his three border collies.
“It is heartbreaking to lose people who have given so much to the residents of this area,” commented Susan Landis, executive director of BAF. “However, it is very satisfying that our community foundation offers an opportunity to create a permanent memorial that will always bear Dr. Meadows’ name and at the same time generate income to help local people who wish to pursue a nursing career.”
Anyone who wishes to make a donation in any amount as a memorial to Dr. Meadows may send a check made out to “BAF-Owen and Brenda Meadows Scholarship” and mail it to BAF, 129 Main St., Suite 203, Beckley, WV 25801. The family will be notified of the gift without reference to the amount.
