Ten Theatre West Virginia (TWV) interns who are spending the summer learning about their craft and honing their skills on stage, will take the spotlight in an open workshop Saturday at the Raleigh Theatre.
The interns will perform songs and monologues before a panel of experts beginning at 10 a.m.
TWV’s Professional Training Program is conducted in partnership with the University of Charleston.
Dr. Pamela Chabora founded the intern program at TWV in 2008, and each year, 10 college undergraduate or graduate students are chosen to participate in master classes in acting, voice and dance.
The interns also have roles in TWV’s summer dramas and musicals.
They earn college credit through the internship and are provided housing by the University of Charleston on the Beckley campus.
During the workshop the interns will perform in front of a panel of professional directors, casting directors, theater educators and other professionals, and be evaluated for their artistic presentations.
Chabora says she wants the interns to experience how a professional audition takes place and be prepared to be more confident actors following the process. It is also good to have an audience present, she notes.
In addition to near nightly performances at Cliffside Amphitheatre, the interns have been taking intensive master classes in acting, voice and dance. Chabora, Master Teacher in performance training, has worked in universities across the country while maintaining a parallel career as an actress.
Assisting Chabora with classes are Terry L. Chasteen, instructor of voice, an associate professor of music at Western Illinois University; acting coach Chris Bellinger, and Vocal instructor Terry A. Evans. All of the instructors are also part of the theater’s cast this summer.
Interns include Nick Pelaccio, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music; Carolyn Glaude, University of Southern Maine, Cody Olson, North Dakota State University, Bethany Gardner, West Virginia Wesleyan; Hayden Spaeth, North Dakota State University; Amy Rowland, University of North Carolina-Pembroke; Joseph Sibley, University of Southern Maine; Meghan Martin, Marshall University; Jenny Fernandez, University of the Arts; and Erika Hakmiller, Drake University.
No admission is charged for the workshop, and it is open to the public.
