Concord University mounting production of ‘Spoon River’

— Concord University’s Theatre Department will perform “Spoon River Anthology” by Edgar Lee Masters in the H.C. Paul Theatre April 23-26 at 8 p.m. nightly.

The H.C. Paul Theatre is located in the Alexander Fine Arts Center on the Athens campus.

An award-winning folk play, “Spoon River” is a series of inter-related monologues interspersed with traditional American music. The show setting is a small, fictional Illinois town at the turn of the 20th century. The seven cast members chosen for the show will be portraying 42 different residents of the town.

Concord Theatre Director Dr. Thomas Gambill noted, “This play has extraordinarily entertaining music and character creation.”

Gambill said “Spoon River” provides a much-needed link to a simpler time and place. “It’s sort of like Mayberry,” he said, “… the characters are unique and some are certainly quirky.”

While Gambill emphasized the University Theatre is traditionally adult-centered, “Spoon River” offers an evening of entertainment that is totally “family friendly.” There is something in the show “for everyone.”

Concord University faculty, staff and students will be admitted to the show free with a validated Concord identification card. General admission will be $5. Reservations can also be made online through www.cuboxoffice.com or calling the Concord University Box Office at 304-384-5101.

Tickets can be picked up before the show at the Concord University Box Office located in the Alexander Fine Arts Center. Seating is limited and reservations are strongly recommended. All reserved tickets will be released at 7:45 p.m. each night of the show.
