Gardening classes planned

The New River Community and Technical College Office of Workforce Education in Lewisburg is partnering with the Greenbrier Valley Master Gardeners to offer a six-week series of community education classes on gardening beginning March 4.

There will be a different instructor for each class. Greenbrier County Extension agent John McCutcheon will cover soil testing and fungicides/pesticides March 4. Organic farmer John Spangler will discuss pests and growing vegetables March 11.

Master gardener Don Delay will talk about soils and composting March 18. Kanawha County Extension agent John Porter will cover edible landscaping March 25.

Master gardener Helen Mitchell’s topic April 1 will be growing herbs. The final class April 8 will cover propagation and seed saving with master gardeners Myke and Donna Myles.

The classes will be at New River’s Lee Street Complex (former Lewisburg Elementary School) from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays. The cost is $25 for all six classes. The registration deadline is Feb. 25.

For over 75 years, the United States Junior Chamber (Jaycees) has recognized the 10 young men and women – under the age of 40 – who best exemplify the highest attributes of the nation’s emerging generation.
