New River College to offer 2-day science program for children

For The Register-Herald

—

New River Community and Technical College will offer a special edition of its popular Kid’s Kollege Nov. 19-20. This fun-filled program is ideal for children of working parents who might need time for Thanksgiving preparations.

The theme for this two-day camp is Mad Scientist Academy. Students will participate in exciting scientific experiments and hear from guest speakers who use various aspects of science in their jobs.

Additionally, attendees will make crafts and projects related to the science theme and have the opportunity to try out scientific equipment used by New River students.

The camp will be at New River’s Nicholas County Campus, 6101 Webster Road, Summersville. It will run from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. each day. Snacks and lunch will be provided.

Students may register for either day for $30 or for both days for $50 per student. Advance registration is required because space is limited. To register or for more information contact New River’s Office of Workforce Development at 304-883-2446.

One student will earn free tuition through an essay contest. To enter, the student should enter an essay of 100 words or fewer that addresses the topic “How I will use science when I grow up.”

The contest is only open to children ages 5-12. Entries must be turned in or postmarked by Oct. 26. They can be mailed or delivered to 830 Northside Drive, Suite 160, Summersville, WV 26251.

An entry form with the full contest rules is available at http://www.newriver.edu/workforce-education/community-education and will be distributed at local schools.
