Fundraising dinner to celebrate 75 years of Ducks Unlimited

BECKLEY — The Beckley Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will hold its annual fundraising dinner at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Beckley Moose Lodge, 410 New River Drive, Beckley.

Local Ducks Unlimited events held throughout the country contribute toward the national effort to raise approximately $170 million annually for wetland conservation. Approximately 88 percent of all funds raised by Ducks Unlimited at events are spent on wetland projects in North America.

Ron Lilly of Cool Ridge, chapter chairman, said this year Ducks Unlimited is celebrating its 75th anniversary. The local chapter has consistently been one of the top chapters in the state in fundraising and efficiency.

There will be several special 75th Anniversary guns and items for raffle at this year’s event.

Other members of the local committee are Bob Monarchy, treasurer; Angela Sinyard; Dr. Andrew Landis; Tony Wheby and Richard Rawlins.

Ducks Unlimited has spent nearly $2 billion dollars to enhance and restore over 10 millions acres of habitat, encompassing nearly 19,000 wetland projects in the United States.

West Virginia completed a project this past year on an island in the Ohio River near Parkersburg. Ducks Unlimited projects provide habitat for over 900 wildlife species, including ducks, geese, whooping cranes, bald eagles and recreational opportunities for the public.

The local chapter is thankful for the support of companies and individuals that support us on a yearly basis. Some of the most loyal supporters are Massie Reclamation, Pineville Paving, Patriot Coal, Arch Coal, Pocahontas Coal, Brooks Run Coal, Mallard Environmental, Childers Enterprises, Dr. Andrew Landis and Petroleum Products.

While Ducks Unlimited has accomplished a great deal since its founding in 1937, the conversation of wetlands demand that the organization continue to accelerate its’ work. Efforts like those of the Beckley Chapter are a vital part of Ducks Unlimited’s total habitat program.
