Esthetics program focuses on skin and makeup branch of cosmetology

New River Community and Technical College is still accepting applications for the new two-semester Certificate in Applied Science in Esthetics program that will begin in the fall semester.

Esthetics is a new offering in the School of Cosmetology located at New River's Greenbrier Valley Campus in Lewisburg.

Classes begin Aug. 19. Interested students should schedule interviews as soon as possible if they wish to enter in the fall.

Esthetics is a branch of cosmetology that is specific to the care of skin and makeup. It involves beautifying the skin through a variety of techniques, including facials, skin analyzing, makeup artistry, microdermabrasion, facial treatments and skin care regimens.

The esthetics field also includes spa elements for the rest of the body, including aromatherapy, foot reflexology, waxing, eyebrow shaping and eyelash tinting.

New River's program consists of 30 credit hours of instruction of both theoretical and practical skill development required for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists.

The program exceeds the 600 clock hours required by the state board. Licensing or certification exams are independent of graduation requirements.

Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to sit for the examination administered by the state board, provided all eligibility requirements are met.

Students in this program must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED). For further information, or to schedule an interview, contact Lisa Carter, program director, at 304-793-3009.
