Influenza is a serious disease. Different influenza virus types circulate each year; therefore, a type appearing one year does not necessarily show up the following year. This year the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that everyone 6 months of age or older receive the vaccine.
The vaccines recommended by the World Health Organization for the 2012-2013 Seasonal Influenza Season will contain the following trivalent vaccines:
A/California/7/2009 (H1N1), like virus; A/Victoria/361/2011 (H3N2), like virus; B/Wisconsin/1/2010, like virus.
These three viruses will be used because they represent influenza viruses that will most likely circulate during the upcoming flu season. Protection develops approximately two weeks after getting the flu shot and may last up to a year.
The Beckley-Raleigh County Health Department, 1602 Harper Road, Beckley, will be giving seasonal flu vaccine to people 18 years of age and older on the following days:
Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
For more information about flu clinics, contact the Beckley-Raleigh County Health Department at 304-252-8531, ext. 0.
