Looking for something different for a special mom this Mother’s Day? Class VI River Runners and Smokey’s on the Gorge are offering a special Sunday on the New River.
In addition to a day of fresh air and sweet treats, the day will be all the more special because some proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.
“It’s rare to find someone who has not been touched by breast cancer, including those of us at Class VI,” said managing partner Jeff Proctor, whose wife Janet was diagnosed with the disease almost 10 years ago. “Janet’s illness and recovery touched all of us and brought us to a stronger understanding of the need for research to find the cure.”
So, on Mother’s Day, Class VI is taking the opportunity to salute mothers everywhere and help women, Proctor said.
“Class VI offers families rafting and dining choices,” he said. “The Mother’s Day raft trip special allows mothers to raft free with one paying guest. The raft trips on the Upper New River and Lower New River are gentle trips, suitable for children as young as 6 and first timers.”
Off the river, Smokey’s on the Gorge is serving a brunch and dinner menu from noon to 8 p.m., which includes something to suit every taste, according to Proctor.
“Brie stuffed quail, herb encrusted pork loin, grilled beef tenders and roasted monkfish star on the buffet,” he said. “They share the table with an omelet and waffle bar, minted sugar snap peas, sautéed asparagus, spring vegetables and a gourmet salad bar.”
Proctor says a portion of the proceeds from the buffet will go to the Komen for the Cure West Virginia affiliate and to the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program.
The real show-stealer is the dessert buffet, Proctor added.
All proceeds from Desserts for the Cure go to breast cancer research programs. Janet Proctor makes some desserts and coordinates donations for the dessert buffet.
“Not only does Janet use her terrific culinary skills to make desserts for the buffet, she used her considerable people skills to get dessert donations from other local chefs and bakers,” Jeff Proctor said. “There are so many delicious choices that diners have trouble deciding what to get.”
