— Last week, it was reported that over 6,000 West Virginians had signed an online petition asking for the State of West Virginia to be allowed to secede from the United States and create its own new government.

And then what?

In fact, reports are that similar petitions have been filed form all 50 states.

Sure, many are just venting, unhappy with the direction of our federal government, perhaps.

Are they disillusioned by politics?

Disgusted by broken promises?

Displeased with the outcome of the recent election?

Disappointed when it seems no one can get ahead?

We can understand frustrations, as we all are living in these tough times.

But this is ridiculous.

Secede from the United States, really?

Until it’s time to get federal money for our schools, roads and disasters, we guess ...

Bet the petition signers didn’t consider those important issues.

Fifty states — UNITED together — that’s what makes our country strong.

Whatever it is that is fueling this madness, let’s move on.

Get over it.

Let’s join together in moving this country forward.

While it is incredible that we are blessed to live in a country that allows the public this type of access to government, petitioning on the White House official website no less, that same energy could be spent in more beneficial ways.

Everyone has been frustrated at one time or another. But division is not the solution — in jest or otherwise.

Fine, you’ve made your point that you’re unhappy with the way things are going. Now it’s time to become part of the solution.

Seats in the peanut gallery come cheap. Unlike the freedom to express views, though sometimes outlandish.

That freedom came with a great price.

A price paid by men and women in uniform, representing these United States.

Something to ponder before hitting the Internet to vent.
