— Thumbs up … to Fayette County Commissioner Matt Wender, honored as one of West Virginia’s Outstanding Democrats of the year. Wender was selected for his hard work and dedication to the Democratic Party in Fayette County. He was recognized at the recent Jefferson-Jackson Celebration in Charleston.

Thumbs up … to White Sulphur Springs’ “Women with Attitude” organization, whose members visited every first- and second-grade classroom in two grade schools. While there, the group gave each child an age-appropriate book to take home.

Thumbs up … to the Battle of the Banks, which will raise money to help disadvantaged children during the holiday season. United Bank, BB&T, City National, First Century Bank, First Community Bank, Peoples Bank, Pioneer Community Bank and Whitesville State Bank will sell train cutouts to raise money for Toys for Tots 2013 in Raleigh, Fayette, Wyoming, Nicholas and Webster counties.

Thumbs up … to Concord University, ranked third in the nation among four-year colleges in the Best for Vets: College 2014 rankings. The listing looked at service member enrollment, percentage of tuition covered by the GI Bill and availability of specific programs to help service members.

Thumbs up … to Slab Fork Community Group, which has been awarded $15,000 to build a new community park. Beaver Coal Co. donated one acre of land in the community for the project.

Thumbs up … to local dealerships working together to establish a recycling initiative: Beckley Auto Mall, Hometown Automotive Group, Hyundai of Beckley and King Coal Chevrolet. Bins placed by the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority allow both the dealerships and the public to recycle.
