With the waning days of summer, pools start closing, schools start opening and generally we all start preparing for the cooler days of fall (even though lately it has felt as if it’s already here).
So what better way to say goodbye to summer than with a weekend full of activities at the 17th annual Appalachian Festival in Beckley.
Originally known only as the Arts and Crafts Fair, this event has since expanded into a community-wide celebration of our heritage, Appalachian traditions and the talents of our community.
The Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce has packed the weekend with events and activities for everyone to enjoy. The BRCCC has again created a true family experience for a last “summer hurrah.” This event shines as a showcase of our community.
Regarding the talent of our community, this event is too big to be contained to one small festival area. Events range from the Exhibition Coal Mine, Tamarack, Theatre West Virginia and uptown Beckley.
The festival is loaded with events that surely offer something for everyone:
Want to see craft demonstrations? Ding!
Ready to sample the best tastes that Beckley has to offer? Check!
Local musicians offering their homegrown melodies? You betcha!
The finest arts and crafts you can find this side of the Appalachians? It’s all here!
The chamber has been credited by some of the vendors for keeping the Arts and Crafts fair a special annual event and preventing it from becoming an everyday run of the mill marketplace. Anyone who attends will find items of great quality and craftsmanship and we applaud that, too.
The many different events scheduled for today through Sunday come together to make up the Appalachian Festival.
From the 49th year of the Arts and Crafts Fair and the Historic Beckley Ghost Tour to the Taste of Appalachia block party and the 17th annual Oldies Car Show with nightly performances at Theatre West Virginia — we're sure to find events where families can enjoy the outdoors, theater and enjoy the culture of the Appalachians.

Get ready, find your comfy walking shoes and be prepared to see, taste, smell and hear the best Appalachia and our community has to offer.
