Still time

You still have time.

If you are reading this and aren’t registered to vote, you still have time to get to the county clerk’s office and fill out the paperwork. Today is the last day to register for the upcoming General Election.

We, however, suspect that nine out of 10 readers of this piece are already registered to vote and will choose to exercise that right in the weeks ahead either during early voting or on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

That’s not just really a guess on our part; there are national statistics that bear out the facts that newspaper readers vote. So that being the case, we encourage you, our readers, to ask your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers if they are indeed registered to vote.

If not, encourage them to take their lunch break today and get it done.

Apathy among voters is one of the greatest challenges we need to overcome in our country.

Will three or four out of every 10 registered voters decide who our next president will be? That’s highly likely. It’s almost a certainty that voter turnout won’t be higher than 50 percent.

What does that say about us as a country, as a state, as a town — when less than half, and many times less than a third of those who can cast a ballot, are making the decisions for us all?

It’s unsettling.

Do your part to combat voter apathy by participating in this year’s election.

It’s the American thing to do.
