As we head quickly toward the opening of early voting in this year’s general election, it is time once again to point out the obvious to the electorate.
Do your homework before casting that ballot.
Candidates are working feverishly to deliver their messages to us, seeking support at the polls.
It is up to this newspaper to do our duty to make sure we can assist in educating you as to who these people are, and what they stand for, as best we can.
Beginning later this week and running daily in our newspaper for several consecutive days you can inform yourself about many of the candidates seeking statewide office by reading the responses they’ve personally given us during editorial board interviews conducted at our Beckley offices.
We invited and posed questions to candidates for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, governor, state Supreme Court, attorney general and commissioner of Agriculture. The sessions were very productive and quite enlightening when it comes to where these people stand on issues and what they believe in.
On Saturday, Oct. 27, candidates running for office at all levels have been invited to have a 250-word submission printed, free of charge, to tell voters about themselves in our “In Their Own Words” section that appears that day in The Register-Herald.
It’s all part of the process.
In addition, the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce will host a Candidate Forum at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. Again, another educational opportunity. There are also other groups and organizations out there hosting similar events.
Citizens need to develop an interest, find out about the candidates and then get to the polls and vote.
And there is still time to register to vote in this election before the Oct. 16 deadline.
There is no excuse not to participate and exercise your American freedom and right to vote.
