Thumbs up ... to Woodrow Wilson’s Ron Kidd for being named Boys Coach of the Year by the Mountain State Athletic Conference. The MSAC announced its awards and held its skills competitions during the recent Night of Champions at the South Charleston Community Center.

Thumbs up ... to the Rotary Club of Beckley’s commitment to education. The club has purchased full-size Webster’s Dictionaries for every third-grader in Raleigh County public and private schools since 2008. The dictionaries were bought with income from the club charitable fund at the Beckley Area Foundation. The Rotary Club established BAF’s first named designated fund shortly after the Foundation was formed in 1985.

Thumbs up ... to U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, who will chair the Senate energy subcommittee that oversees national mining policy and mining education and research. Besides national mining policy, the subcommittee on public lands, forests and mining has oversight over federal mineral leasing, lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service, and the establishment of wildlife refuges on public lands and wilderness designations.

Thumbs up ... to The Kiwanis Club of Beckley, which presented a check for $500 to Hospice of Southern West Virginia at Bowers Hospice House. The money comes from a matching grant to the club from the state Kiwanis Foundation and will be used for a bench to be placed along a new walking trail at the Hospice of Southern West Virginia campus on Cranberry Drive. The trails are expected to be completed this summer, with help from the Boy Scouts of America.

Thumbs up ... to Ramey Ford, for its “Go Further with Ford Night,” which raised $1,000 to benefit Hospice of Southern West Virginia and earlier this month presented a check to an organization representative at Ramey Ford in Beckley.

Thumbs up ... to the Denver Foundation’s Home Flights, which offer an organized, all-expenses-paid excursion to D.C. for West Virginia veterans. The trip included visits with elected officials Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin and Rep. Nick Rahall, as well as tours of the World War II, Korean and Vietnam memorials.

Thumbs up ... to the Harrison County library — the smallest library in the state — being named the 2012 Best Small Library in America, by the Library Journal and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The library was chosen for its strong community involvement and patron support.
