— Thumbs up ... to two Hinton residents recognized for their dedication and service to the community. The West Virginia Grantmaker’s Association named Mary Lou Haley the “State Volunteer of the Year” and honored David Ziegler with a lifelong service award.

Thumbs up ... to a $9.4 million renovation to Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital. The funding resulted in 19 additional private rooms, an updated entryway and facade, new windows, an upgraded HVAC system and three new elevators.

Thumbs up ... to historic Fayetteville being named The Best River Town of 2013 by Blue Ridge River Tours of 2013. The reader-based poll pulled in 30,000 votes.

Thumbs up ... to Italian auto parts maker Sogefi, which plans a $20 million expansion of its plant in Prichard. The move is expected to create 250 new jobs and should be completed by May 2014.

Thumbs up ... to FedEx, which delivered a variety of much-needed items to the Women’s Resource Center. Workers brought a variety of personal hygiene items, nonperishable food items, household cleaning products, books, clothing and more.

Thumbs up ... to the Cline Family Foundation’s pledge of a $250,000 matching donation to Burlington United Methodist Family Services. The money will be used to build a chapel. The Greg and Darlene Darby Family Trust and Little General Stores also offered a $100,000 gift.

Thumbs up ... to the math and reading skills of West Virginia’s fourth-and-fifth graders. Although the state’s youngsters still lag behind the national average, their results are showing improvement.

Thumbs up ... to New River Elementary students’ weeklong food drive, which accumulated 2,024 items to be donated to Fayette Plateau Ministerial Association’s food pantry. Every year, the entire fourth-grade class completes community service projects.  

Thumbs up ... to Prosperity First Baptist Church, which raised $500 for food purchases for The Carpenter’s Corner and collected a large number of nonperishables during October. This congregation of 50 to 60 people has done this for about eight years.
