Volunteerism

It works for all of us

— While we are in National Volunteer Week, there’s no better time to make or reaffirm a commitment to community service.

Our advice if you’re not already involved: Pick a favorite charity and get started.

You can make a big difference in our community, our state and our country by simply being active.

There are needs all around us.

An elderly neighbor that needs a lawn mowed.

A working couple that may occasional need help with childcare as they struggle to make ends meet.

A child that needs a warm jacket or new shoes.

One could pick up trash in a neighborhood or park.

Schools and churches are always in need of volunteers.

If we take the time to look around, the options for being of service are plentiful.

Analyze your talents to find a program that could best utilize your skill set.

Of course, donations of money to charities is always helpful.

Financial backing for worthy causes is a constant struggle in any community.

It allows volunteers to have the resources needed to accomplish their tasks more efficiently.

So also consider taking a moment to write a check to a cause that you have long admired.

But also remember, a donation of one’s time on a consistent basis is of great value.

A few hours a week can make a significant impact.

The United Way of Southern West Virginia is one of the primary drivers in the areas of charity and goodwill in our region.

It serves folks in Raleigh, Fayette, Nicholas and Summers counties, benefiting 32 outstanding agency partners.

The goal for the 2012-13 campaign was met, which meant $500,000 was poured back into our area, helping thousands of men, women and children, all in need in a variety of ways.

A new campaign has begun with a larger goal, $525,000. Successful events like Celebrity Night and Dancing With the Stars are on the horizon to help achieve that lofty benchmark.

These are fun ways to make a difference in our communities.

As a statement by the United Way says — “Be part of the change. Reach out a hand of one. And influence the condition of all.”

Our hope is that great joy will be found in your volunteering.

Because there may be no better feeling that giving of oneself for the benefit of others.
