— Thumbs up ... to a $500 contribution from the Wyoming County Prosecutor’s office to One Voice and Anti-Oxyana. The two groups have collected more than $6,000 toward the purchase of a drug dog for the Oceana Police Department. The dog has been purchased and is in training; remaining funds will be used for equipment.

 

Thumbs up ... to the director of mining and industrial extension at West Virginia University, recognized for his commitment to coal mining safety. James Dean received the “Because of You” Safety Professional Award at the 2013 Spirit of the Coalfields Miners’ Celebration in Beckley.



Thumbs up ... to Pineville First Methodist Church, which recently celebrated its 138th year. Built in 1948, the church contained the only stained glass windows in Wyoming County at that time. The windows were custom designed for the church by a New Jersey glass studio and depict Bible stories and church worship symbols.



Thumbs up ... to eight public schools in West Virginia that got new musical instruments from the VH1 Save The Music Foundation program. The Division of Culture and History reported each school received $30,000 worth of clarinets, flutes and other instruments. Schools included from this area were Beckley-Stratton Middle School in Raleigh County, Summers Middle School in Summers County, Summersville Middle School in Nicholas County and Trap Hill Middle School in Raleigh County.



Thumbs up ... to Stonewall Marketing and Adventures on the Gorge, which recently earned multiple Travel Weekly Magellan Awards for the resort’s 2013 television campaign and print collateral. In addition, Stonewall and AOTG were honored for the 74-page 2013 Resort Vacation Planner for Adventures on the Gorge.



Thumbs up ... to employees of United Bank Inc., which presented a check for $5,300 to the United Way of Southern West Virginia. These funds were donated to the 20th annual Kids Classic Arcade through sponsorships from more than 60 local area businesses as part of this year’s Kids Classic Festival.



Thumbs up ... to Raleigh Center, a Genesis HealthCare skilled nursing center in Daniels, which recently received the “Excellence in Action” award from My InnerView by National Research Corporation. This award recognizes long-term care and senior living organizations that achieve the highest levels of satisfaction excellence as demonstrated by overall patient, resident or employee satisfaction scores.

 

Thumbs up ... to a $1.5 million Oral Disease Prevention Programs grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the West Virginia Oral Health Program. The program will receive $310,600 each year for a five-year period. The funding will be used to develop and implement the West Virginia Dental Sealant Project, which will reach 109 schools during the five-year project period.



Thumbs up ... to Shade Tree Car Club, which continues to support nonprofit groups. The club keeps only enough money to operate the car shows and the rest of it goes to charity. Jackie Withrow Hospital got $1,500 and Hospice and the Raleigh County Humane Society each were given $500.
