Thumbs up ... to the School of Harmony’s continuing commitment to offer a music and fine arts program. The school has been invited to apply to Steinway & Sons and become an All-Steinway School of Distinction. The goal is to have 10 of the hand-made pianos in place for teaching and concerts. The move would make the school the only one in the state — and one of only 30 in the world — to have that designation.
Thumbs up ... to Cliffs Natural Resources for a $5,000 matching donation to The Way Youth Center in Mullens. The faith-based facility provides a safe and positive atmosphere for area youths to gather for social and physical activities.
Thumbs up ... to Oak Hill graduate Erin Compton, inducted into the Marshall University Athletics Hall of Fame. Compton was the Herd’s first female All-American, placing eighth in the discus at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships, the highest finish in NCAA competition for a Thundering Herd track athlete. Compton, who was inducted into the Red Devil Sports Hall of Fame, holds many other records as well.
Thumbs up ... to The Cathedral Cafe and New River Gorge, which earned top honors in the inaugural Best of West Virginia Awards conducted by WV Living Magazine. The Cathedral Cafe in Fayetteville was voted the best coffee shop, and the New River Gorge in Lansing was named the best scenic view in the state.
Thumbs up ... to efforts in the area to support the United Way, which is already bearing fruit. During the official kick-off of the 2013-2014 annual United Way campaign at Crossroads Mall recently, it was noted the agency has challenged the community to help raise $525,000, and has already achieved 30 percent of its goal.
Thumbs up ... to Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College’s announcement that AT&T has made a $10,000 contribution for scholarships as part of Southern Community College Foundation’s Vision 2020 Major Gifts Campaign. The support is part of AT&T Aspire, the company’s $350 million commitment to education.
Thumbs up ... to Lewisburg resident Rich Rosendale, former executive chef and director of food and beverage at The Greenbrier. Rosendale will host “Recipe Rehab” on TV with Evette Rios. The show takes a high-calorie family favorite recipe and recreates it into a healthier, lower-calorie version.
Thumbs up ... to Beckley being designated a “Storm Ready” community by the National Weather Service, a designation that only one other city in the state, Logan, has achieved. Necessary checkpoints for a city to get the nod include having a 24-hour warning point with people who know what to do with emergency information.
