— Thumbs up ... to the continuation of the PBS show “Abracadabra,” which encourages young viewers through fun and humorous storylines involving healthy eating, active play and character-building. The show was developed by Dr. Michael Adelman, president of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg.



Thumbs up ... to this year’s inductees to the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame. The 2013 list of honorees will include Melvin and Ray Goins, Peter Marshall, Wayne Moss, Tim O’Brien, The Swan Silvertones, Ada “Bricktop” Smith and Eleanor Steber. The induction ceremony will be Nov. 16 at Charleston’s Cultural Center Theater.



Thumbs up ... to  West Virginia University investing $1 million over two years in the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope to help keep a key resource for the world’s astronomers open. WVU students and faculty will get 500 more hours of research time out of the arrangement. The 16 million-ton structure in Pocahontas County is the world’s largest fully steerable single-dish radio telescope.



Thumbs up ... to more West Virginians than ever volunteering for Make It Shine and Adopt-A-Highway. Close to 14,000 people took part in litter cleanups sponsored by the state Department of Environmental Protection. More than 450 tons of trash and debris was removed as part of 147 projects. Some 438,115 pounds of litter, including 1,569 tires, was collected.



Thumbs up ... to Concord University again being ranked as one of the top colleges in the Southeast by the Princeton Review as part of its 2014 Best Colleges, Region by Region. The ranking was based on academic excellence and student surveys.



Thumbs up ... to Eunice “Grandma” Garten, of Oak Hill, recognized recently for her 100th birthday. She spent time with family members last Saturday and she was feted at a celebration Sunday by her church family at Oak Hill Gospel Tabernacle. She also was honored with a gathering Wednesday morning at the Oak Hill McDonald’s.
