— Anticipation always runs high when it’s time for the announcement of who will be honored with the YMCA of Southern West Virginia’s annual Spirit of Beckley award.

More than 25 years into the program, some wonder if the time will ever come when the Y runs out of candidates for the honor.

The answer to that question is a hearty “No!” Bravo to the Y, which certainly scored a huge win with its 2013 choice — Jerry and Sherry Rose.

The owners, operators and instructors of Beckley Dance Theatre are a popular and fitting choice for the Spirit of Beckley.

The couple has been teaching the young dancers of southern West Virginia for more than 50 years, coaching them to performances that continue to delight audiences.

But for the Roses, it’s not all about the dance. They have instilled a variety of life lessons into several generations of students, helping to build their self-esteem, learn the importance of being on time, providing them with an appreciation of the arts and having passion for whatever it is they choose to do in life.

Their daughter, Heather Zickefoose, simply says her parents are “very excited” to have been tapped for the Spirit of Beckley.

Well, Jerry and Sherry, we are very excited, too!

Your Spirit shines in everything you do. We love your annual performance of that consumate holiday tradition, “The Nutcracker.” We look forward to spring recitals. In even a simple conversation, it is apparent that you both are passionate about what you do.

We are highly anticipating the Dec. 9 dinner at which you will receive your full tribute as this year’s honorees.

We don’t believe that the YMCA could have made a better choice.

Bravo, indeed!

If you would like to help recognize Jerry and Sherry Rose for all that they have brought to Beckley and southern West Virginia, or to make a reservation for the dinner, call the YMCA at 304-252-0715.
