Thumbs up ... to the Meals on Wheels program operated by the Raleigh County Commission on Aging. The program served 49,400 meals last fiscal year, in addition to the 44,000 meals served to seniors at six different sites in the county.

Thumbs up ... to Chuck Lucas, selected as the 25th recipient of the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award. Lucas has long been active behind the scenes in supporting a variety of civic efforts such as Rotary, Beckley Area Foundation, Storm Haven, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and many more.

Thumbs up ... to West Virginia Habitat for Humanity’s continuing presence in the Mountain State. The organization has reached a milestone — constructing its 700th home in the state. The latest house was built in Morgantown for a woman and her two daughters.

Thumbs down ... to scammers who are sending fake “funeral notice” e-mails that often contain the names, addresses and logos of local funeral homes. Those getting the e-mail click a link that ultimately lets their computer be hijacked by malicious software. Once the computer is infected, the software can be used to steal personal and financial information or send out spam e-mails.

Thumbs up ... to Living Waters Baptist Church, which stepped up to help a 92-year-old Beckley resident. Church members provided the funds and built a wheelchair-accessible deck and ramp to make life easier for Marie Vandall.

Thumbs up ... to Larry Stoumile and Randall Boyd, who rescued an elderly sister and brother when their Teel Road home caught fire in early March. The men were recognized with plaques at the recent Beckley Common Council meeting.
