— Thumbs up ... to Erna Hash, a resident of Pine Lodge Care and Rehabilitation Center of Beckley. Hash celebrated her 100th birthday Jan. 22. She enjoys gospel music, going to church, television, socializing and spending time with her family.



Thumbs up ... to the Danese Volunteer Fire Department and everyone who helped with or participated in its recent basketball tournament. The event, a fundraiser for Haiti earthquake relief, raised over $700. Collins Middle School students also worked on behalf of Haiti and raised over $300 for American Red Cross relief efforts.



Thumbs up ... to the Martha Gaines and Russell Wehrle Memorial Foundation for a $20,000 gift to the Boy Scouts of America for The Summit: Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. The presentation was made at a dinner that recognized task force and planning committee members who helped bring the scouting center to Fayette County. Proceeds from the sales of the Boy Scouts 100th Anniversary Special Section printed in The Register-Herald were donated to the local Boy Scouts of America chapter.



Thumbs up ... to Beckley teacher Dreama McNeal, chosen as a Mom’s Choice Awards gold winner in the Best Children’s Picture book category for her story, “Kyle’s Colorful Life.” The Mom’s Choice Awards recognize authors, inventors and companies for creating quality family-friendly media, products and services. The story is about a boy with autism. 



Thumbs up ... to Vola Marie Adkins Hurt of Beckley, who will celebrate her 90th birthday with a drop-in social at 8 p.m. Sunday in fellowship hall of Oak Grove Christian Church.



Thumbs up ... to members of the Beckley-Tricounty Professional Baseball Association for donating $3,000 to the Beckley Babe Ruth Baseball League. The money was part of funds from unclaimed property. The remaining $14,000 will be set up in a Beckley Area Foundation fund with interest earned going to Babe Ruth.



Thumbs up ... to Snowshoe Mountain Resort for turning all this winter’s snow into a positive. Snowfall total for the 2009-10 season has surpassed the annual average of 180 inches with 192 inches since October. All this has created some of the best conditions in the resort’s 36-year-history.



Thumbs up ... to youth group members at Beckley Presbyterian Church. The youngsters held a 30-hour fast as a fundraiser and to experience firsthand what it means to go hungry.
