Independence Day

Celebrating the greatest nation in the world

Today is the day that our nation sets aside each year to celebrate...

It’s freedom...

It’s liberty...

It’s independence.

This nationally-observed holiday in the United States, of course, commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

We are blessed to live in a country that allows its citizens many freedoms that other countries around the world do not enjoy.

It’s a day that we can proudly hang Old Glory from our porch.

And break out that red, white and blue tie.

It should be a day of fun and celebration, but we urge our readers to do so responsibly.

If there is drinking at a party or picnic, please designate a sober driver.

The same should be observed if boating on our state’s lakes and streams.

And use caution if you’re igniting your own fireworks display, as accidents peak during this week each year.

On a day known for flag-waving, cookouts, parades and fireworks, let us not forget those who fought and are fighting to give us this freedom — our servicemen and servicewomen in all branches of the military.

May they soon return safely to their families.

And may God continue to bless America.
