Thumbs down ... to WVU’s continued placement in the top five in rankings of the nation’s party schools. The Princeton Review gave Iowa the top ranking on the list. Rounding out the Top 5 were the University of California, Santa Barbara; the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; West Virginia University and Syracuse University.
Thumbs up ... to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin’s approval of a request by Delegate Rick Moye to provide $8,000 to help the Lillian James Learning Center in Crab Orchard to purchase a new van. In business more than three decades, the center provides job training and employment placement for adults with disabilities.
Thumbs up ... to the five dealerships making up the Thornhill Auto Group, which gave a vehicle each to two deserving individuals as part of its Christmas in July celebration as a way to give back to the community. More than 1,000 nominations were received. The winners were Clay Norris of Charleston and Kathy Martin of Henlawson.
Thumbs up ... to Bluefield’s Bob and Ben Ramsey, who recently won their first West Virginia Father-Child Championship at the Resort at Glade Springs. Each team played the resort’s Cobb and Stonehaven courses and dealt with a two-hour rainstorm delay on the next-to-last day.
Thumbs up ... to an upgrade in security measures for the Monroe County magistrates’ office. More than half of the $118,080 Court Security Fund grant from the West Virginia Division of Justice and Community Services will go for equipment in the county’s 911 center needed to monitor the duress alarm system, and for cameras that will be installed in and around the magistrates’ office.
Thumbs up ... to West Virginia’s public schools having a new program focusing on oral health when classes begin later this month. Teachers across West Virginia will use the program, which focuses on each student group’s needs, from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Prevention is a key aspect of the new program.
Thumbs up ... to Local Boy Scout Cody Jones, 17, of Shady Spring, for working on his final project to earn the top rank in Scouting — Eagle Scout. Jones decided to build a playground for New Life Baptist in White Oak. He has purchased a chainlink fence and is going to donate a swingset as well as provide picnic tables to put in and mulch part of the area.
Thumbs up ... to the first evidence of a national decline in childhood obesity. In 18 states, there were at least slight drops in obesity for low-income preschoolers. Obesity continues to be one of the nation’s leading public health problems with a third of U.S. children and teens and more than two-thirds of adults being obese or overweight.
