Thumbs up ... to West Virginia University’s Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism, which could soon expand the availability of online and traditional classes for military service members and others who have studied in a Defense Department training program. The Defense Information School is the Defense Department’s premier institution for public affairs and visual information training.

Thumbs up ... to the National Mining Association saying global demand for coal and other natural resources bodes well for the industry, particularly in developing countries. President Hal Quinn says coal is on track to become the world’s primary energy source, surpassing oil by 2015. In the U.S., total coal consumption is expected to grow by 50 million tons over last year, due in part to cooler weather and natural gas prices that the Energy Information Administration predicts will jump 22 percent.

Thumbs up ... to West Virginia being honored with a stamp this year to commemorate the state’s 150th anniversary. The stamp will be a part of the Postal Service’s global “forever” stamp series. It features a 2008 image by Tyler County photographer Roger Spencer showing an early morning view from the Highland Scenic Highway in Pocahontas County. An issue date has not been announced.
