— Thumbs up ... to the development in Fayette County of a new home for the Boy Scouts of America’s 2013 National Jamboree which has already had a $50 million impact. The State Journal reports that nearby businesses such as hotels housing workers have added $1 million to the local economy.



Thumbs down . . . to $1.7 million in federal stimulus money being spent on high speed Internet routers for State Police that turned out to be useless. The routers lack the proper components to function. Only the unit in Logan County works.



Thumbs down ... to people trying to scam money by claiming to be from the Fayette County Fraternal Order of Police’s Shop With A Cop program. Officials say Fayette’s Shop With A Cop is done only by telephone.



Thumbs up ... to the unemployment rates falling in 36 of West Virginia’s 55 counties in September. WorkForce West Virginia said that 11 counties reported jobless rate increases, while rates were unchanged in eight counties.  

Thumbs up ... to Amtrak having nearly 55,000 passenger boardings and departures at West Virginia stations last fiscal year. In this region, the Hinton station had 8,700 while the White Sulphur Springs station had 6,000 boardings and departures.



Thumbs up ... to a program that supports specialty crop farmers and has awarded $217,000 in federal grants to eight projects in West Virginia. From this area, Downstream Strategies of Ronceverte was one of the grant recipients.



Thumbs up ... to the West Virginia Tourism Commission’s Matching Advertising Partnership Program for awarding millions to help promote the area. From this region, $209,000 went to the Fayette-Mercer-Raleigh County Winter Coalition and $26,000 went to Country Road Cabins in Fayette County.



Thumbs up ... to Fayette County National Bank for making a $5,000 donation to the All Fayette County Veterans Memorial. The memorial, which is still in its final design stage, will be located at Huse Memorial Park.
