— Thumbs up ... to Valley College, which has doubled its enrollment and is moving from its 7,000-square-foot South Oakwood Avenue home. The new location, beside Ollie’s, will offer students and staff 17,000 square feet of space for expanded services and programs.

Thumbs up ... to civic leaders in Greenbrier County for seeking grant funding to help save two historic sites that have been added to the West Virginia Endangered Properties List. Named were the Blue Sulphur Springs Pavilion and “The Westly,” a Sears kit house in Lewisburg.

Thumbs up ... to Chick-fil-A’s recent Operation Underdog’s Spirit Night. The restaurant donated $1,186 in proceeds to the group that helps the Humane Society of Raleigh County find homes for animals turned over to the shelter.

Thumbs up ... to West Virginia University’s Institute of Technology for receiving $150,000 from the estate of the late Rodney Cornell. The funds for the Brian Bills Memorial Scholarship Fund will help support civil engineering students.

Thumbs up ... to the Bluefield Beavers for winning the Class AA state basketball title. The team defeated Fairmont Senior 63-43 to claim the school’s third state basketball championship.

Thumbs up ... to the Berkeley County Landmarks Commission for its efforts to compile a list of cemeteries to protect. The commission has identified 10 previously unknown cemeteries in hopes of getting them on the National Register of Historic Places.
