Thumbs up ... to Pizza Hut management, which has chosen to involve employees in community service by working and serving at The Carpenter’s Corner on the first Thursday of each month. With the addition of Pizza Hut, The Carpenter’s Corner is fast approaching its goal to be open every day.

Thumbs up ... to Deena Rodgers, an administrative assistant at the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College, named the school’s outstanding contributor for 2012. Rodgers was chosen because her responsibilities have evolved and grown over the years and she has handled each new challenge with exceptional skill.

Thumbs up ... to the approximately 600 retailers throughout the state that are participating in the West Virginia lottery’s annual “Give and Win Food Drive” For every nonperishable can of food donated through Nov. 9 at a participating retailer, the donor got one free lottery promotional ticket. All donated items will be distributed to local food banks and charities.

Thumbs up ... to West Virginia country music sensation Taylor Made for reaching the charts yet again. The group is No. 21 on MusicRow for their song, “Things You Don’t Grow Out Of.” It is reportedly the first time in 10 years an independent label has made it on the charts. Their newest song, “That’s What Life Is,” will be released early in 2013.

Thumbs up ... to Lena Ratliff of Alderson, who celebrated her 100th birthday recently. Mrs. Ratliff was married to the late Fred Ratliff and is the mother of three children, Bill (deceased), Norma Carter and Ann Sinclair. She has 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Thumbs up ... to L&S Toyota in Beckley for presenting the McDowell County Commission On Aging with a new Sienna van. The gift was part of Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good, a nationwide initiative to give vehicles to nonprofit organizations needing a boost to continue to help their communities. They also received a service agreement from the dealership.
