Surge in fuel prices brings out true colors

An energy poll released last week shows that more Americans now consider increased oil drilling and new power plants a greater priority than energy conservation.

We don’t know when — or if — the price of gas is going to level off or decline, but the recent surge in prices, which has pushed the per gallon fee at the pumps well over $4, and past $5 in some parts of the country, appears to be striking a popular chord with nearly half of Americans — to the tune of accelerating the exploring and drilling for oil and the building of new power plants.

It’s a significant change in attitudes, just since February.

Increasing energy supplies is now more important than protecting the environment in the opinion of six out of 10 Americans.

My, my — take away the toys and watch the true colors shine through.

So while Congress continues to debate and feud over how to best address the crisis, the majority of Americans are now speaking a little different dialect.

This should spell continued good news for the coal industry and West Virginia.

New power plants, and a stronger push for coal-to-liquids, should be moving back to the forefront of our nation’s energy planning for the future.

Both have been shunned in the recent past, but now that attitudes are changing, virtually overnight, expect to see a renewed interest.

It’s amazing what can happen when people start to feel like they are being backed into a corner.
