Thumbs

Thumbs up ... to Fayetteville High School student Morgan Wheeler, chosen as the first-place winner in the recent town of Fayetteville-sponsored recycling logo design contest for area students K-12. Her design will become the official recycling program logo for the town.

Thumbs down .... to the litterbugs who continue to dump their trash on our landscape. Visitors and permanent residents alike cringe when they see pop cans, plastic bags and fast-food bags sullying the beautiful landscape.

Thumbs up ... to Zach Whitten, who won the West Virginia Bass Federation’s 11-14 age division during the recent state tournament at Sutton Lake with a 6-pound smallmouth spotted bass. He now advances to the national tournament in August at Lake Monticello in Columbia, S.C.

Thumbs up ... to the return of Al Jessup. The ice cream man has been pushing his specialty cart in Beckley and selling ice cream to area children for 28 years.

Thumbs up ... to two Lewisburg residents for being among those who received 2008 Governor’s Arts Awards at the Cultural Center in Charleston. Distinguished Service to the Arts Awards were presented to Adam DeGraff and Barbara Nissmann.

Thumbs up ... to Joseph L. Badgley, selected by the technical college’s Board of Governors as president of West Virginia State Community and Technical College.

Thumbs up ... to everyone who has made donations to The Salvation Army and The Register-Herald’s Camp-4-Kids fund, which, as of June 5, had raised $9,164. Money raised will help fund the camp experience for youngsters from Raleigh, Fayette, Webster, Wyoming, Nicholas and Greenbrier counties.
