Of more odds than ends — This lil’ piggy went to market ...

Christian Giggenbach
This Side of the Fence

Note from Christian: I’m stumped for a good column idea this week so here’s another helping of offbeat stories taken directly from the Associated Press. However, I have taken the liberty of writing the headlines. Here’s hoping my writer’s block doesn’t last too long. To make up for my lack of original prose, I have included a funny photo for your enjoyment that I took recently. Carpe Diem everybody. Have a great week.

Don’t Worry or Eat and Grow Old

An Indiana woman who turned 115 on Sunday has been declared the world’s oldest known person by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Edna Parker, of Shelbyville, is one of only 75 living people — 11 men and 64 women — known to be 110 or older, according to a California research group.

Her DNA has been preserved for scientific study along with about 100 others who have lived at least 110 years.

“We don’t know why she’s lived so long,” said Don Parker, her 59-year-old grandson. “But she’s never been a worrier and she’s always been a thin person, so maybe that has something to do with it.”

One Strike, Yer’ both Out

A former California mayor and his wife were sentenced to 6 months in jail last week for stealing more than $20,000 from a Little League baseball fund.

Jim Nehmans, 50, and his wife Kelly, 44, pleaded guilty to grand theft by embezzlement and perjury last Thursday.

Nehmans was first elected mayor of Adelanto (pop. 23,500) in 2003 and resigned his position last month. Nehmans was the former president of the Adelanto Youth Little League and his wife was a former board member.

Police said the missing money was taken from the league’s annual fireworks sale over a three-year period beginning in 2004.

The league is comprised of 12 divisions which play at five separate ball parks, one of which overlooks the Adelanto City Hall.

Either pay (hiccup) or get punched

Two Tennessee men who were walking to get gas for their empty vehicle were jailed last week after they started fighting over who should pay the tab.

Police said David A. Lundsford suffered a minor stab wound in the abdomen and that at least one witness saw Lundsford punching the other defendant, Roger Gifford.

Police said the two were walking along the highway after running out of gas and began arguing over who would pay for it.

Public intoxication charges were filed against both men.

This lil’ piggy went to market ...

A pig wandering along a Georgia highway snarled morning traffic last week as commuters slowed down to catch a glimpse of the young hog.

Police said the pig most likely came from a small truck that was traveling on Interstate 75 in Cobb County about 9:30 a.m.

No accidents were reported from drivers who spotted the swine, but traffic was temporarily halted when the pig was rescued.

No. 6,442 was the last straw

A Bucharest, Romanian man was fined $223 recently for making 6,442 profane phone calls to an emergency number, according to police.

The man’s identity was not revealed, however, police said that he called the 112 emergency number from November to January of this year to swear at operators using a prepaid mobile phone.

The man has denied making the calls. Bucharest authorities say over 90 percent of calls to its 112 system are hoaxes or non-emergencies.

A system to identify users of prepaid mobile phones is scheduled to be in effect this summer.

Two unidentified men show their love for Todd Hardy, of Lewisburg, who was seen in his homemade costume outside The Irish Pub on Washington Street on St. Patrick’s Day. The costume is Hardy’s rendering of “Patrick,” a starfish who is SpongBob SquarePants’ best friend. Christian Giggenbach/Register-Herald Reporter (Click for larger image)
