The first half of the Capital Classic went the way of the Mountaineers.
The West Virginia University women’s team improved to 5-2 with a 64-48 win over Marshall (4-4) Tuesday night at the Charleston Civic Center.
Crystal Leary led the Mountaineers with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. She also recorded five steals and dished out a pair of assists. Bria Holmes scored 15 points and blocked a pair of shots, while Ayana Dunning scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds.
WVU used its depth to wear down the Herd. The Mountaineers played 13 players, compared to only eight that saw action for MU.
Leandra King was the only Marshall player to finish in double-figures, scoring 10 points to go along with six rebounds.
The win was WVU’s eighth straight in a series it now leads 36-16.
Kevin Jones’ stay with the NBA Developmental League lasted just five games.
After averaging 23.6 points and 12. 6 rebounds in those contests with the Canton Charge, the former West Virginia University star forward was recalled to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who signed him to a contract last week.
The 6-foot-8 Jones, who led the Big East in both scoring and rebounding last season, will join the Cavs, who entered Wednesday’s contest against Chicago with a 4-14 record, and is expected to contribute immediately.
Jones was one of the final players cut by the Cavs out of training camp, after going undrafted and signing a free agent contract with the organization.
