HUNTINGTON —
DeAndre Kane scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures as Marshall beat UNC Wilmington 61-58 on Saturday.
Elijah Pittman had 13 points for the Thundering Herd (5-3), D.D. Scarver had 12, and Nigel Spikes scored 10 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.
The Seahawks (3-4) were led by Bluefield native Craig Ponder’s 26 points.
The Herd outrebounded the Seahawks 39-30, and Marshall made 16 of 26 from the free-throw line to UNC Wilmington’s 3 of 6.
The game was tied at 28 at the break, but the Seahawks took a 36-31 lead on Matt Wilson’s free throw 3:03 into the second half. The Herd took a 39-38 lead on Pittman’s jumper in the back-and-forth contest.
The final tie came at 58-all with 21 seconds to go on a free throw by Kane, who made the second for a 59-58 lead, and Marshall held off UNC Wilmington for the victory.

Musgrave, WVU teammates see tornado devastation up close
West Virginia University pitcher Harrison Musgrave has spent his entire life in the hills of West Virginia. He didn’t know what a tornado siren was — let alone the damage that can be done by swirling winds.
“I didn’t even know that they were going off,” Musgrave said. “I didn’t even know that they had sirens. I know I feel like a total idiot, but I heard them go off and I just thought it was an alarm going off.” -

West Virginia University head baseball coach Randy Mazey was having lunch at an Oklahoma City restaurant Monday afternoon, keeping a close watch on the television set.
