Marshall begins 2-game road swing tonight at Southern Miss

BECKLEY — Marshall will play the first of two straight road games tonight at Southern Miss. Tip-off will be 7 p.m. Eastern time, and the game can be seen on WCHS.

The Golden Eagles (15-4, 4-0 Conference USA) sit atop the league standings, one-half game ahead of Memphis (14-3, 3-0), which Marshall will visit Saturday.

Southern Miss is unbeaten at home, winning all seven games at Reed Green Coliseum thus far. The Thundering Herd, meanwhile, is 0-5 on the road.

Marshall (9-9, 2-1) is coming off its second rout of a conference opponent this season, a 77-56 drubbing of East Carolina on Saturday. The win came 10 days after a 79-61 win over Tulsa, also at home.

Junior guard DeAndre Kane could be the key to a good road performance on Saturday. The Pittsburgh native is averaging 18.2 points in his five career games against the Golden  Eagles. This season, the preseason all-conference performer is averaging 14.6 points per game and a top-five NCAA mark of 7.6 assists per game.

Kane’s numbers continue to climb the career records list. He needs just five assists to become the fourth player in Marshall history to rank in the  top 10 in assists and top 25 in scoring.

Marshall is getting balanced scoring this season.

Junior forward Elijah Pittman ranks just ahead of Kane for the team lead with 14.7 points per game, the 10th-best mark in the conference. Kane ranks 11th in the conference in scoring, while D.D. Scarver ranks 12th with 13.8 points per game.

Southern Miss has won seven consecutive games, and has won its four C-USA games by an average of 15.3 points. The Golden Eagles lead the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (38.4) and 3-point field goal percentage defense (29.4).

Junior forward Dwayne Davis leads a balanced Southern Miss offense with 12.9 points per game.

Marshall leads the all-time series 8-6 and has won the past two meetings. The last time they met was in the semifinals of the 2012 C-USA Tournament in Memphis, where Marshall, the No. 6 seed, upset No. 2 Southern Miss 73-62.
