Can Red Raiders avenge 7-6 loss to Mountaineers?

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia had nipped Texas 7-6 in 1956 before defeating the Longhorns again 48-45 last Saturday on the road.

Ironically, the Mountaineers, now 5-0 and ranked No. 5 by The Associated Press, had done the same to Texas Tech by the identical score of 7-6 in the Jan. 1, 1938, Sun Bowl at El Paso, Texas.

So the Red Raiders will also be seeking to avenge that loss at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the teams’ Big 12 Conference matchup in Lubbock, Texas. 

Texas Tech, 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the league, has been listed as a 4 1/2-point underdog against the Mountaineers, now 2-0 and tied for first place in the Big 12.

In that 1938 Sun Bowl contest, Davey Isaac scored for WVU on a 1-yard plunge and Kelly Moan kicked the extra point. That came in the second quarter before a crowd of only12,000 fans.

A player whose last name was Calhoun tallied Texas Tech’s TD on a 4-yard run. But the PAT attempt failed.

Dr. Marshall “Little Sleepy” Glenn, who’s in the WVU Hall of Fame, was in his first year as head coach of the Mountaineers. They finished with an 8-1-1 record that season.

Tommy Tuberville is in his third year as Tech’s head coach. His record is 17-13 to date. This is his 17th season overall as a college head coach, with a career record of 127-73.

The Red Raiders were 5-7 in 2011, including 2-7 in the conference and in ninth place. Eighteen starters are among 49 holdover lettermen on this year’s squad.

Oklahoma knocked off Texas Tech 41-20 last Saturday.

Andrew Buie certainly deserved to be selected as Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

WVU’s 5-foot-9, 188-pound sophomore running back from Jacksonville, Fla., carried the ball 31 times for 207 yards and two touchdowns against Texas.

He also caught three passes for an additional 66 yards.

Buie now has rushed 93 times for 633 yards and five touchdowns in five games. He also owns 16 receptions for 231 yards.

Unless the injury bug shows up again, Buie seems to be establishing himself as a key cog in WVU’s highly productive offense.

He was a superstar at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville.

Buie was a three-year starter and helped his team win the Florida 1-A state championship in 2010. That capped a 29-6 record for his three seasons.

He rushed for 1,901 yards and 22 touchdowns on 201 carries as a junior. Then, in his senior season, he netted 1,782 yards on 211 carries and tallied 26 TDs.

Buie played in 11 games at WVU as a true freshman.
